Gazing upwards into the canopy of these great trees at Dartington Hall the classic lyrics of Purple Haze came into my head.
The gardens are grade 2* listed and looking fabulous in the sunshine. Though I don’t ‘spose Jimi ever came to Dartington?
The photos were taken using the ‘panorama’ setting on an iPhone, but with the camera panning vertically. It allows you to stand close to the tree to emphasise the massiveness. The tree-trunks can look a bit distorted, but that’s cool (man).
n.b. The top two photos are of a pair of plane trees (couldn’t be quite sure which species) with their characteristic flaky bark; whilst the bottom two shots are of a row of sweet chestnuts (Castanea sativa) which show their characteristic twisted trunks.
